ATLANTA, GA — As Atlanta prepares for Election Day, the Southern Center for Human Rights (SCHR) has launched its “Term in Review” campaign, a weeklong retrospective examining key policy decisions made by the Atlanta City Council over the past four years. The campaign highlights the Council’s record on public safety, human rights, and criminal legal reform, with a focus on the impact of carceral policies on marginalized communities.

Each day leading up to the election, SCHR has released a themed post spotlighting pivotal moments and legislative actions, including:

  • Ordinance 22-R-3001: Buckhead Safety Council
  • Ordinance 24-O-1007: The signature validation process for “Cop City”
  • Ordinance 22-O-1632 The authorization of the lease of the Atlanta City Detention Center to Fulton County
  • Ordinance 25-O-1009: The gutting of the Office of the Inspector General
  • Ordinance 24-O-1474: Funding authorization for Policing Alternatives & Diversion Initiative
  • Resolution 22-R-4708: Human Rights Cities

In addition to the daily campaign posts, SCHR compiled a comprehensive file of documents detailing its advocacy with partners over the past four years. This includes letters, memos, reports, emails, and public testimony submitted to the Atlanta City Council.

“The SCHR Term in Review reminds lawmakers that although members of the public are not their staff, we are essential partners. Elected officials are responsible for researching and proposing effective policies. Having public servants willing to offer their time and expertise should be regarded as a treasured resource,” said Tiffany Roberts, SCHR’s Public Policy Director.

As Atlanta voters head to the polls, we hope that our Term in Review has been helpful to the public as they reflect on what is required for leaders to be committed to dignity, equality and justice.
