Introducing Our Substack: The Indignant South

Posted by Southern Center for Human Rights on July 31, 2025

Welcome to The Indignant South—a new digital space by the Southern Center for Human Rights (SCHR) built for reflection, reaction, and visioning justice in the Deep South.

We’re launching this Substack because we know that the fight for equality, dignity, and justice doesn’t just happen in courtrooms, policy meetings, or protest lines. It also happens in conversations. In writing. In the ongoing effort to speak plainly and boldly about the world we’re trying to change and the one we want to build.

So, what is The Indignant South, exactly?

It’s our voice beyond the press releases. A space to spotlight not just what we’re doing at SCHR, but why it matters and how it connects to the broader political and cultural moments happening around us. Here, we’ll share original essays, timely reflections, media roundups, and dispatches from the heart of our work.

Why “The Indignant South”?

To be honest, we tossed around a few names before this one stuck. The Indignant South just felt like the right fit. It captures the heart of what we do and where we do it.

in·dig·na·tion

/ˌindiɡˈnāSH(ə)n/

: anger aroused by something unjust, unworthy, or mean

Indignation is what arises when people are denied justice. It’s the spark behind every motion we file, every bill we fight, every voice we uplift. And the South? Well, that’s home. That’s where our work is rooted. That’s where change must keep pushing forward—and where there’s still so much to say.

Who’s Behind the Scenes?

This space is run by SCHR’s Substack team—Shameka Gartrell (Development Associate), Kathryn Hamoudah (Communications Director), and Cortez Wright (Marketing Director). Together, we’ll be curating and shaping this space into something worth returning to.

What Can You Expect?

Each month, we’ll bring you:

  • Media Roundups: Curated articles, op-eds, and news stories relevant to our work and the broader criminal legal landscape
  • Original Content: Essays, reflections, and thought pieces from SCHR staff and community members
  • Subscriber Exclusives: Q&As, behind-the-scenes insights, and more for our Pillar of Justice members

We want this to be a living space. One that responds to the moment, evolves with our movement, and invites you to think with us.
