FIRST AMENDMENT LAWYER BRIDGE
Protest and dissent are cornerstones of a functioning democracy. In the South, they are increasingly met with surveillance, criminalization, and retaliation.
The First Amendment Lawyer Bridge exists to protect people who speak out. Launched by the Southern Center for Human Rights, the Bridge connects protestors, organizers, journalists, and movement groups with experienced First Amendment attorneys when they need legal support. It is a rapid-response network built to defend free speech, assembly, and the right to dissent, particularly in moments of heightened political repression.
Across the Deep South, lawmakers and law enforcement have expanded efforts to suppress protest through aggressive policing, vague “critical infrastructure” laws, and criminal charges designed to intimidate and silence. These tactics fall hardest on Black organizers, racial justice advocates, and people challenging state violence. The Bridge exists to interrupt that harm before it escalates and to ensure that exercising constitutional rights does not come at the cost of personal freedom.
Through partnerships with volunteer attorneys and allied legal organizations, the Bridge provides legal observation, direct representation, and referrals for people targeted because they protested, reported, or organized. It also serves as connective tissue between movements and the legal community, helping lawyers show up effectively and responsibly in moments that demand speed, trust, and skill.
